The area known as Costa Maya is the coastal region that extends from the Sian Ka'an to Belize in the south on the Caribbean side of the of the Mexican Yucatan peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. The area is changing rapidly. Mahahual, (also spelled Majahual or Mahajual) is arguably the center of the Costa Maya, and has been welcoming cruise ships since Dec. 2002 with shops and tourist activities. It is the second largest cruise ship destination in Mexico.

Xcalak is a charming and quaint fishing village that has the right to claim itself as the furthest southern place on the Mexican Caribbean. Some of the best fishing and diving in the world can be found here, too. There is a significant population of U.S. and Canadian retirees and business people living in harmony here.

The region is adjacent to the world's second largest barrier reef, Chinchorro Reef and has some of the most beautiful water, beaches, and largely undeveloped property...for now.

In August of 2007 the area took the full force of Hurricane Dean. The entire area is rebuilding and the Mexican government has invested in making Costa Maya better than ever. By September of 2008, Mahahual will be ready to receive cruise ships again. The area will be better than ever and people are investing now because of this.
